Two Nights in a Sleep Laboratory

I've moved all of my blogging activity to The Lucid Blog.

Last week I went to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough to spend two nights in a sleep laboratory.

I was aware that I would be sleeping with some sensors attached to me, but what I wasn't prepared for was the sheer number of sensors.

If my memory serves me correctly I had:

1 on my leg
1 on my finger
3 on my chest
1 on my stomach
1 on my throat
2 on my neck
1 on my top lip
1 on my temple
1 on my forehead
4 on the top of my head.

Each sensor has one or two wires running from it so, once you're attached, you can't leave the bed till the next morning.

To apply each sensor, an antiseptic liquid was used followed by a brief rub with some emmory paper to remove the top layer of skin.

The first night this was only a mild discomfort, but the second night the emmory paper left me a little sore.

I came home with a very uncomfortable graze on my neck.

I was also video-taped for later analysis.

I actually slept fairly well considering the uncomfortable surroundings which was a surprise. Also a little frustrating as my sleep difficulties re-emerged as soon as I returned to my own bed.

Anyway, I though this post might be useful to anyone else who is scheduled for a visit to a sleep clinic so they have an idea of what to expect.

It's fairly uncomfortable, but it's bearable and certainly worth the effort if it means your problem can be diagnosed.

I should find out on my next visit whether or not anthing useful was discovered.

Sorry to hear about your sleep disorder. Glad to hear that you took some time off to see some doctors about it. Hope your doctors can find out what is causing it. Hope you feel better and sleep better.
