The Angel Inside - eBook Review

I would like to start by saying that I enjoyed reading The Angel Inside. It is interesting and informative.

It follows the life altering day of a young man named Thomas. We find him depressed in Florence, Italy, at the end of a long journey through Europe that he started to try and find some meaning in life. An old man appears and starts teaching Thomas some “life altering truths”.

A lot of what the old man teaches Thomas is interesting, combining Art and History to teach these lessons. It is frustrating at times as the lesson the old man is trying to teach quickly becomes obvious but our young Thomas always seems to be a couple of steps behind the rest of us. He also has quite a talent for asking the most obvious questions that most of us would have had no need to ask. Yet, despite this ability, it takes Thomas until the very last page in the book to ask the old man his name (which without giving the ending away is exactly what you guessed it would be since page two).

The writing style is very easy to read and flows well. The characters are endearing and if nothing else it’s a good story. There is a lot of dialogue which means the narration is kept to a minimum. This is an approach I appreciate. Unfortunately I kept being distracted by the frequent typing errors. I was in no way proof-reading the work, but just by reading the book through once I noticed at least nine different errors. This is a lot for a book just seventy pages in length.

The other real criticism I must make of this book is that part of the lesson the old man teaches to Thomas is the need to follow his dreams. He even encourages Thomas to quit his job and pursue his dream. This is okay because Thomas has a well paid job and a rich father so money is not a worry. All he has to fear is his fathers’ disapproval.

For most people, however, money is quite important. I, for instance, have a family to support and provide for. It does touch on this slightly by mentioning that one reason for people not pursuing their dreams is the fear that they won’t be able to pay the bills or look after their family. But that’s as far as it goes!

It raises the issue but never addresses it, offering no solutions or alternatives. I for one would put my family’s interests above any of my personal dreams of ambitions. I believe it is called responsibility.

That being said this book is a good read with a variety of good practical lessons and just about everybody will find something that can help improve their work or some other aspect of their life. Another really good feature is the section of questions at the end of the book to help you think about what you’ve read and what you personally can take from it and make use of.

All in all, as a piece of light reading, it’s definitely worth a look no matter who you are. Virtually everybody will find something in this book to enjoy and at just $10 for the complete ebook, ( $14 for the hard copy ) this is a nice little investment.
